1. What the new QuickBooks
database structure will mean
The latest version of
QuickBooks in the US QuickBooks 2006 released in
November 2005, has introduced a new database
structure. Some of the new things to expect in
Australia and New Zealand in the future:
-
A new
SQL
relational database structure, with true
client server technology, in plain English
means, in multi user mode you will have less
record locking and the ability to run
reports will be much quicker
-
Enterprise has gone from
10 to 15 simultaneous users.
-
200% improvement in
performance over Premier
-
Always on Audit Trail -
You can no longer turn off the audit trail
but they promise that it will not degrade
performance.
-
ODBC compliant database,
which means you can access data directly
from Crystal reports, Microsoft Access, and
other ODBC complaint applications

2. IIF format no longer
supported by
Intuit and can easily corrupt company
files.
Quoted directly from the
Intuit website
“Importing
incorrect IIF files can lead to corruption of
QuickBooks company files. Therefore, Intuit
strongly discourages relying on IIF files for
application integration. Intuit cannot support
customers who have used IIF files created by
third-party applications.”
There are lots of QuickBooks
company data files that have become corrupted by
the IIF format, in the last month I have seen
two major data corruptions, which will require a
restart to fix the problem. The IIF format is
unreliable and not robust enough especially for
importing transactions into QuickBooks. I
recommend that you advise your clients to avoid
using it and instead use the supported qbXML
format that is part of the SDK.
Both the Transaction Importer
and Exporter use the Intuit supported qbXML
format.

Performance of QuickBooks
company file.
Generally the performance of
your company file is determined by three things
-
Data size and integrity
– Size of your company file anything over
150mb you generally see performance start to
drop off, damaged lists and damaged links
slow down QuickBooks, have a look in the
QBWIN.log file for errors
-
Computer system related
– The power of
the processor, available memory or low
specification of the machine.
-
Network traffic related
– Slow
transfer speeds due to volume of users data
being passed over the network, or sharing
configuration.
